Top 10 Vanillas for Spring 2015
OK, most of us LOVE a vanilla fragrance and it’s universally noted as one of the sexiest scents that will make your date want to snuggle in close and get serious whiffs of your deliciousness. Vanilla comes in so many styles and can be the main note or a backing player, it can smell like a bakery or warm freshly washed skin and it can even be cool and aloof. So many choices and sometimes it’s nice to be given a bit of a helpful map. Let’s have a look at 10 that I adore and have bottles or decants of in my collection.
A*Men Pure Havane by Thierry Mugler: I know it says MEN but believe me Thierry Mugler has made this one for everyone. A hotter, sexier, honey/chocolate A*Men that will lure everyone into your web, one little whiff of A*Men Pure Havane and they will be addicted to you. Here the vanilla is mixed into crunchy honeycomb and is way less overpowering than the original, though it is tenacious and one spritz will last you most of the day.
Bvlgari Omnia Indian Garnet by Bvlgari: This is my absolute favourite of the BVLGARI Omnia range, even the superfun pink & orange packaging is cheerful. The bright, zesty citrus opening that morphs into a beautiful green tuberose and then morphs again into a light vanilla/amber woodsiness will get you every time. This baby is sheer and perfectly placed for those beautiful sunshiny days of spring, you will always have a big smile on your face wearing Bvlgari Omnia Indian Garnet by Bvlgari.
Eau Duelle by Diptyque: Sizzling, scorching spices and zingy citrus open up Eau Duelle in a fabulous display. Then as the fireworks subside we are left with a tea/vanilla/resin fragrance that is warm and dry. It’s an interesting take on vanilla that surprises me every time. After about an hour Eau Duelle becomes the softest skin scent, it barely hums above your skin but adds the most delightful texture and nuance to your own scent. Respritz every 3-4 hours or spray your scarf for extra longevity.
Elie Saab Le Parfum Intense by Elie Saab: Elie Saab makes ridiculously beautiful gowns that are both opulent and wearable, few designers have captured their own style in fragrance so well. Here we have an over the top honeyed orange blossom tempered by vanilla/amber, not so sweet that you’ll get diabetes but luxuriously sweet and slightly animal. Wear this when you need to dress up and be 100% present, this is a spring fragrance of power and after a few hours it turns into a dead sexy growling pussycat.
Le Male by Jean Paul Gaultier: Don’t let the name fool you. Le Male is a sensual, unisex fragrance that was absolutely ubiquitous in the 1990s, I used to follow hot men around in clubs floating in their sillage and whole clubs smelled of this gem back then. Green and sharp top runs through a spicy orange blossom heart to an amber/vanilla dry down that is unforgettable. Ladies, don’t let the boys have all the fun.
Pure Honey by Kim Kardashian: Love her or hate her Kim Kardashian has made one fragrance that even the perfumistas talk about with kindness. Here we have a funky floral that is pretty sweet, on some people it can be overmuch, and has lovely animalic honey playing in the background. The vanilla in Pure Honey is not a main note but it is a sweetener that you can smell through the whole life of the fragrance playing soft background noise. You can spritz in the morning and still smell Pure Honey when you get home from work at night.
Sartorial by Penhaligon’s: Another one aimed at the boys but definitely in the unisex basket Sartorial is a favourite fragrance of one of my buddies mothers. She uses it almost exclusively day and night. The vanilla is less prominent here but it does buoy up the rest of the fragrance. Sartorial opens all fresh green sparkling aldehydes, then moves into a lush cologne-esque heart with lavender and leather winding through a soft dewy bouquet but it is the dry down that is my favourite part; amber, vanilla, honey and resins are the stars but it is a glorious melange that whispers away for ages. YUMMY!
Kenzo Jungle L’Elephant by Kenzo: A naughty, modern, sexy, slightly sweaty vanilla from 1996. In Jungle L’elephant vanilla is merely a bit player in one of the most interesting and alluring fragrances ever made. Spices, sweetness, fruit and green notes all swirl around the vanilla and create something totally new. Personally I think this is Kenzo’s masterpiece. Great wear time and quite potent, be careful because they will stampede you like a herd of elephants.
Un Bois Vanille by Serge Lutens: Here is an island paradise vanilla, the best word to describe this woodsy vanilla with a dash of coconut cream and a thin strip of licorice is tropical. Serge Lutens is famous for creating stand out fragrances that have a magical journey. In Un Bois Vanille the journey is circular and notes reappear through the fragrance life to surprise and delight you. I am well into my second bottle of this very special vanilla that is drizzled over a hefty stack of musks and is as cozy as a cuddle.
Vanilla & Anise by Jo Malone: Another licorice vanilla but Jo Malone does it much lighter and with a really fun, saucy wink. Vanilla & Anise is a perfect weather getting warmer vanilla that will not cloy or be overpowering. All sweet citrus and herbal spice, Vanilla & Anise opens quite big and has an extremely smooth and elegant balminess about it. An absolutely unisex offering that you will need to carry with you for re-spritzing every couple of hours because it is a cologne.
This is a blog so I hope you get involved and take the time to comment, ask questions and generally become a part of the action.
Waft on my lovelies,
